Dear people responsible for business standards and oversight,

Any resource extraction or other activity on uncontacted Indigenous peoples’ land is a human rights violation, and risks mass deaths. Your industry standards and certifications must prohibit this.

Uncontacted Indigenous peoples’ rights are being violated, their lands destroyed and their lives threatened by companies and criminals who extract gold, nickel, timber, oil and other commodities, or who raze the forest for cattle ranches or palm oil and rubber plantations. These goods, produced by both licensed and illegal operators at the cost of Indigenous lives, end up in global supply chains.

This is against international law, which prohibits activity on Indigenous land without their Free, Prior and Informed Consent, and which recognizes that no consent is possible from uncontacted peoples. Failure to act is complicity in this abuse.

I urge you to ensure that your industry standards and certifications include an absolute prohibition on extracting or sourcing materials from the territories of uncontacted Indigenous peoples, including sourcing from other companies that operate in these territories. Standards must include requirements for robust tracing of the origins of materials in supply chains.

Sourcing from uncontacted Indigenous peoples’ land is a violation of human rights law, and a matter of life or death.
