Dear Elon Musk, Wang Chuanfu, Oliver Blume and Oliver Zipse, The survival of the uncontacted Hongana Manyawa Indigenous people in Halmahera, Indonesia is at risk because nickel and cobalt mining for electric vehicle batteries is destroying their rainforest. Uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable people on the planet: when they and their land are left in peace, they can thrive, but without their forests they will not survive. Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) from affected Indigenous people is required under international law for all developments on their lands. Uncontacted tribes cannot give their FPIC so therefore all mining on their land in Halmahera is not only devastating for them but is illegal under international law. I call on you to take a stand for uncontacted tribes and to set an example to other electric vehicle companies by publicly committing to ensure that none of the minerals that your companies buy ever comes from the lands of uncontacted Indigenous people in Halmahera. I also ask you to use your influence to urge the mining companies, including Eramet, Tsingshan and PT ANTAM to stop mining on the lands of uncontacted Hongana Manyawa. Finally, please urge the government of Indonesia to establish an ‘Uncontacted Tribe No-Go zone’ to protect the uncontacted Hongana Manyawa and their territories. I'm copying this message to companies involved in the supply of nickel from Halmahera, and the Indonesian authorities. Yours sincerely, {user_data~First name} {user_data~Last name}
